The original family of Harper Fowlkes lived in the house for nearly 100 years. In fact, the family owned the house for the first 100 years of its life before it passed to another prominent family. In the year 1931, Henry Dawson, a prominent shipping magnate, passed away. Stephen Gardner, a shipping magnate, also purchased the house for a few years and sold it to his brother John.
The Harper Fowlkes House was designed by architect Charles B. Cluskey, who was hired by Stephen Gardner. The house is constructed of brick covered with plaster. The facade is scored to evoke the appearance of large blocks of stone. It has twelve fireplaces and six chimneys.
The foyer of the house has a curved double staircase and an elliptical opening, while the double parlor has a skylight and a marble floor. The house’s interior is decorated with period antiques and furnishings. It features an impressive collection of antebellum furniture and collectibles.
